<b>DAMASCUS: Twin bombings and mortar fire killed three people and wounded 22 near the Syrian capital's famed Ummayad mosque on Thursday, state news agency SANA reported.</b><br />
<br />
"Three people were killed and 22 wounded in terrorist attacks with mortar rounds and the explosion of two bombs," SANA said, citing police officials.<br />
<br />
The attacks took place on Mardam Bek Street and in the Kalassa district, near the outskirts of the historic mosque and the bustling Hamidiyeh market.<br />
<br />
Rebels in neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Damascus have regularly fired rockets and mortar rounds into the centre of the city.<br />
<br />
In recent weeks, the attacks have caused increasing numbers of casualties, with four children and a man killed on Monday when a shell hit a school bus in the Bab Sharqi neighbourhood.<br />

<b>TEHRAN: Iran "favourably welcomes" a Russian plan to head off threatened US strikes on Syria by securing a deal to destroy the regime's chemical weapons, the foreign ministry spokeswoman said Tuesday.</b><br />

Iran is Syria's chief regional ally and has repeatedly warned that any US-led strikes against the Damascus regime could ignite widespread conflagration.<br />
<br />
"The Islamic republic of Iran favourably welcomes the (Russian) initiative which aims at halting all military action" against Syria, Marzieh Afgham told a media conference in Tehran.<br />
